Our research group has a broad interest in understanding the fundamental, physiological adaptations that support the diving abilities and life history strategies of marine mammals. We focus particularly on diving physiology, cardiovascular and fasting adaptations, reproductive biology and disease in seals and cetaceans. We also focus on physiology of diving peoples as comparative models for marine mammal adaptation and evolution. By integrating data from state-of-the-art biologging devices, field-based and laboratory-based behavioural studies, and laboratory sample analyses, we aim to uncover the essential mechanisms that underpin the ecological success of this group of animals. Ultimately, our interdisciplinary approach combines physiology, behaviour, ecology, and conservation biology to address how marine vertebrates respond to environmental challenges.
